2018 Ford Escape vs. 2018 Toyota RAV4

If you're looking for a sporty take on the crossover SUV, the 2018 Escape and the 2018 RAV4 are two great options. That said, they do have different things to offer their buyers that may make one the better choice.

Drivers in Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg, Easton, Nazareth and Lehigh Valley can find out the key differences between the 2018 Ford Escape and the 2018 Toyota RAV4 with our vehicle comparison.

SUV Performance Comparison: Escape vs. RAV4

Ford Escape Performance Options

The 2018 Escape is available with three engines. The base engine is a 2.5-liter inline-four rated for 168 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque. This is a capable entry-level engine that's great for the regular commute.

For those looking for more excitement, the 1.5-liter turbo-four produces 179 horsepower and 177 lb-ft of low-end torque, and the 2.0-liter turbo-four produces 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque.

Regardless of engine variant, the Escape transfers power to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available as well. The Escape also uses a system that splits the engine power between the wheels in slippery situations, and it can work the brakes individually to simulate a torque vectoring system for better handling.

Even without that system, the Escape has remarkable composure and the road manners of a much sportier vehicle. Its steering is well-weighted and precise, and its brakes are strong and reliable.

Toyota RAV4 Performance Options

The 2018 RAV4 is available with only one engine, a 2.5-liter inline-four that produces 176 horsepower. It transfers power to the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, but it lacks the smooth acceleration and strength of the Escape's turbo-four.

The RAV4 is available in all-wheel drive, though it doesn't have the Escape's sophisticated system, and its steering is light on center with no feedback. It drives comfortably but nowhere near sporty.

2018 Escape vs. 2018 RAV4: Exterior Design & Style

The exterior of the Escape is crisp and clean, borrowing a few style cues from newer hatchbacks. Its front end was redesigned to provide balance, and the tall roofline and subtle sculpting give it a modern look. It's similar inside, with a boldly contoured dash and a practical arrangement of controls as well as soft-touch fabrics and high-quality materials.

The RAV4 was not so clean in its execution. Some of the exterior redesign cut into driver visibility and passenger space without providing proper proportions or a cohesive look. Its pinched front end is the focal point, but it's ruined by an odd, bulky tail end that belongs to a different vehicle.
