2017 Ford Transit Connect Review

We don't hear much about vans these days in our world of sedans and SUVs, but they do fulfill an important place on America's roadways. People who need the space to haul furniture, tools, and gear heavily use them in businesses. Among the best, most reliable vans out there today are, perhaps not surprisingly, made by Ford.

Drivers in Stroudsburg, East Stroudsburg, Easton, Nazareth and Lehigh Valley, PA, are discovering the Ford Transit Connect-a great alternative to minivans or full-sized cargo vans-and the utility it provides. Read our review of the 2017 Ford Transit Connect, including its features, options, and body styles, and learn where you can take a test drive today.

2017 Ford Transit Connect

The Ford Transit Connect is a van that provides an outstanding balance between the comfort of a regular minivan and the utility of a full-sized cargo van. It has a variety of body lengths and styles, options for cargo area, and configurations; there's available third-row seating; and it has great handling. New this year are additional features at just about every trim level, as well as standard cruise control and parking sensors. Finally, the SYNC® 3 infotainment system replaces the older MyFord Touch interface.

Configurations and Base Features

The 2017 Ford Transit Connect comes in three trim levels, two body styles, and two different wheelbases for maximum customizability. It seats either five or seven people, depending on the selected body style. At the base level, you get keyless entry, cruise control, parking sensors (wagon configuration only), air conditioning, foldable front passenger seat, power windows and locks, and both tie-down hooks and overhead storage. Entertainment-wise, you get a basic sound system with auxiliary audio jack.

Wagon styles also give lumbar support for the driver, two additional rows of seating, a 4-speaker sound system, and back seat climate controls.

Higher Level Options

Stepping up to one of the higher trim levels nets you a wealth of additional options, including privacy glass, carpeted floors, enhanced infotainment system, the Ford MyKey safety suite of telematics and features, power adjust seating, voice controls, automatic climate control, GPS navigation, and more.

As you might expect, many of the upper-level trim features can be had as individual add-ons at lower levels, allowing you to create exactly the van configuration you want.

Performance and Safety

The base engine for the new Connect is a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine, which gives you 169 horsepower with 171 lb-ft of torque paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It's expected to deliver an EPA-estimated 23 combined MPG and have a maximum payload of 1,620 pounds with the ability to tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Safety-wise, you get the expected anti-lock brakes, airbags, and Traction and Stability Control. You also get Hill-Start Assist, and with the right options added, daytime running lights, parking sensors, Blind Spot monitoring with Cross-Traffic Warnings, and a rearview camera. Ford SYNC® 3 and MyKey offer features like automatic emergency calling and geo-fencing features. The van got a 5-Star Safety Rating for overall crash protection from government tests.

Comfort and Drive

The goal of the Ford Transit Connect, and one that it succeeds in achieving, is flexibility. It can be used as a family vehicle, a business van, or for hauling. It offers between 77.1 and 128.6 cubic feet of space, depending on the configuration. The controls are easy to reach and intuitive, and the interior materials are quite comfortable, so on long drives you won't suffer. It has steering and handling that's quite agile for a van and makes it fun to drive. For a 4-cylinder engine, it also has quite a bit of pickup.
