The engine you decide to enjoy with your 2021 Ford Explorer is going to significantly influence the performance personality of the SUV. There's a single, standard 4-cylinder motor in addition to a pair of V6 offerings.
The 2.3L 4-cylinder comes with two EPA-estimated fuel economies depending on the drivetrain you select:

The larger, punchier 3.0L V6 returns an EPA-estimated 18 city/24 highway MPG and only comes in 4-wheel drive. Finally, the 3.3L V6 with a 4-wheel drive setup returns a strong EPA-estimated 23 city/26 highway MPG.
2021 Ford Explorer: Horsepower, Torque, and Towing
It's important to balance your Ford Explorer gas mileage with enough strength to meet your everyday needs.
If you're just doing light commuting around town in the Explorer, the standard 2.3L 4-cylinder engine will be plenty strong. It pumps out a strong 300 horsepower, 310 lb-ft of torque, and can tow as much as 5,300 pounds.
The larger 3.0L V6 comes in two states of tune:
- 3.0L V6 makes 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque in Platinum trim
- 3.0L V6 makes 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque in ST trim
The maximum towing capacity of the V6 is also the most impressive of the trio, peaking at 5,600 pounds. Finally, you can still use the 3.3L hybrid for towing, as it reaches 5,000 pounds of capacity. In terms of output, the hybrid makes 318 horsepower and 322 lb-ft of torque.
