Ford Explorer MPG

With the introduction of the 3.3L V6 hybrid engine into the 2020 Ford Explorer, fuel economy sees a noticeable uptick from previous iterations. The hybrid powertrain will return an EPA-estimated 27 city/29 highway MPG.

The two alternative motors for the Explorer still do their best to prioritize fuel economy, too. The 3.0L V6 returns an EPA-estimated 18 city/24 highway MPG, while the 2.3L 4-cylinder receives an EPA-estimated 21 city /28 highway MPG.

Horsepower & Torque

Fuel economy is much appreciated in the long term, but it's also nice to pair this efficiency with power and acceleration--something the Ford Explorer does exceptionally well.

For starters, the 2.3L EcoBoost® showcases 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. This engine also comes with optional 4WD and a Class II Trailer Tow Package.

Next up is the adaptable hybrid motor, which still generates 322 horsepower and 318 lb-ft of torque, while doing all it can to keep you away from the fuel pump.

Lastly, there are two iterations of the 3.0L V6 in terms of power output. You can either make use of 365 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque or step up to the enhanced version, which boasts 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque.

Additional Performance Features

The engines are certainly what drive the Ford Explorer and they play a big part in this SUV's overall performance, but there are a few other features that are worth noting.

For starters, the sculpted 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission accompanies each engine and provides a smooth, subtle transition between gears.

You'll also be ready to tackle any type of weather or terrain, thanks to the intuitive Terrain Management System™. With this system, you can select between the following drive modes:

  • Normal
  • Trail
  • Deep snow/sand
  • Slippery
  • Sport
  • Tow/haul
  • Eco

Each setting is designed to handle a specific type of landscape. If you plan on towing the family boat out to the lake, you'll appreciate the trailer sway control system designed to selectively brake and adjust the engine power to help keep your trailer straight.

Finally, there's Sidewind Stabilization, which helps your SUV remain composed with a trailer attached, even as you encounter heavy gusts of wind.
